Ecological Significance

Clarborough Tunnel is a beautiful site designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) for its ground flora assemblages. The cutting sides of the railway, especially at the eastern end of the tunnel, support an exceptional range of plant species. These habitats are dominated by tor grass and include an abundance of calcicolous species such as spiny restharrow, greater burnet saxifrage and hairy St John’s-wort. This distinctive flora has developed as a result of the extensive gypsum excavated and deposited during the construction of the tunnel, which created the favourable ground conditions seen today.

Badger Monitoring & Protection

Whitcher Wildlife has provided long-term ecological support at Clarborough Tunnel, primarily working with Network Rail and its contractors in relation to the significant badger activity present across the site. Previous works have included ecological support for vegetation clearance, fencing installation and track works, ensuring that essential maintenance could be undertaken while protecting the badgers and this sensitive environment.

Proposed future works include significant drainage improvements, which will require ongoing badger monitoring and support to ensure disturbance is avoided while allowing works to proceed safely and efficiently. Whitcher Wildlife will work closely with AMCO Giffen, building on an established understanding of the site to design appropriate mitigation measures, supported by licencing where required. This approach will ensure that ecological interests are protected while maintaining the safety and operation of the railway.
