What are Reptile Surveys?

Several reptile species are protected under UK legislation, and all are considered material considerations in the planning process. Development or land management works that affect suitable reptile habitat may therefore require surveys to assess the potential presence of reptiles and to inform appropriate mitigation. Early assessment helps identify constraints and ensures works can be planned and delivered in line with best practice and policy requirements.

Habitat Suitability & Connectivity

Reptile surveys typically begin with an initial site assessment to establish whether suitable habitat is present for reptiles to bask, take refuge or forage. Whitcher Wildlife Ltd ecologists are experienced in reptile habitat assessment and will consider both the habitats present on site and their connectivity to the surrounding landscape when determining reptile potential.

Where a site is assessed as having moderate to high potential for reptiles, or where the proposed works are likely to result in significant impacts, more detailed presence or likely absence surveys may be required. These surveys involve the placement of artificial refugia, such as felt or corrugated sheets, across areas of suitable habitat. Following a settling-in period, a minimum of seven survey visits are undertaken during suitable weather conditions between March and October. During each visit, surveyors record reptiles basking on or sheltering beneath the refugia.

The findings of our reptile surveys are presented in a clear and comprehensive report, setting out survey results, assessing the potential impacts of proposed works and providing proportionate recommendations to support the planning or delivery of works.
