Bats
From time to time, Network Rail identifies structures within its estate that are no longer required for operational purposes and are classified as liability assets. These are typically buildings that have fallen out of use and may be subject to vandalism, arson or ongoing maintenance costs that can no longer be justified. Many are former level crossing keeper’s houses, reflecting an earlier era of railway operation, although other types of redundant buildings are also included.
Such structures often provide highly suitable roosting opportunities for bats, and ecological constraints are therefore common. Whitcher Wildlife provides specialist ecological support ahead of demolition, undertaking Preliminary Roost Assessments and dusk emergence surveys to determine bat presence. Where bats are identified, we develop appropriate mitigation strategies and support the licencing process with Natural England. Once licences are secured, we continue to provide ecological support throughout the licenced period, ensuring that bats are protected and mitigation is implemented correctly, while enabling demolition works to proceed safely and efficiently.
